When You Feel Stuck Between Who You Were and Who You Are Becoming

There is a unique kind of discomfort that comes when the version of yourself you used to be no longer fits, but the version you are becoming does not feel fully formed yet. You find yourself standing in the middle of a transition, looking back at what was familiar while trying to move toward something you cannot fully see. It can feel confusing, lonely, and unsettling. If this is where you are, understand this: feeling stuck between who you were and who you are becoming does not mean something is wrong. It often means growth is taking place beneath the surface.
Most women expect transformation to feel empowering and exciting all the time. What many do not realize is that growth often begins with discomfort. The habits, beliefs, relationships, and identities that once felt comfortable may no longer align with the person you are becoming. Yet because the future version of yourself is still unfolding, it can feel as though you are caught between two worlds. One is familiar but no longer fulfilling. The other is meaningful but not yet fully clear.
The first step is not to force yourself to have all the answers. The first step is to acknowledge that transitions are naturally uncertain. Ask yourself: “What am I outgrowing right now?” “What parts of my life no longer feel aligned with who I am becoming?” These questions create space for honesty. You cannot move forward while pretending that everything still fits.
Next, give yourself permission to grieve what you are leaving behind. Even positive growth can involve loss. You may be letting go of old beliefs, relationships, routines, or expectations that once felt important. It is normal to miss what was familiar, even when you know it is time to move forward. Grief does not mean you are making the wrong decision. It means you are honoring a chapter that mattered.
Then, focus less on becoming someone new and more on becoming more fully yourself. Many women approach growth as though they need to reinvent themselves completely. True transformation is often about uncovering who you have always been underneath fear, conditioning, and expectations. Instead of asking, “Who should I become?” try asking, “Who am I when I stop pretending to be someone I am not?”
It is also important to stop comparing your transition to someone else's journey. Growth is deeply personal. While others may seem confident and certain, you are only seeing a small part of their story. Your path will unfold in its own timing. Trusting that process requires patience, especially when the next step is not completely clear.
Another powerful practice is learning to celebrate small signs of growth. Notice where you respond differently than you would have a year ago. Notice the boundaries you now set, the awareness you have gained, or the courage it took to leave behind something that no longer served you. Progress is not always dramatic. Sometimes it looks like quietly choosing yourself in ways you never could before.
Finally, remember that becoming is a process, not a destination. You do not need to have your future figured out in order to keep moving forward. The goal is not perfection. The goal is alignment. Every honest choice you make brings you closer to the woman you are meant to be.
If you feel caught between who you were and who you are becoming, know that you are not lost. You are in transition. And as Victoria Finch teaches through her work, some of the most meaningful growth happens in the space between certainty and possibility.
